Day 5 of PROS Posture Month – Best Couch Posture
How aligned is this posture on the couch?
Well if it’s not fabulous then sit up and continue on watching or reading so you can get that ‘best couch posture’ become a habit.
Let’s look at your posture from the front
Is your posture lining up? We should see:
- Nose over sternum, sternum over pubic bone, all lining up
- Feet and knees underneath hips, in other words. In other words you are sitting up
But instead, could this be you:
- Bent like a banana 🍌?
- Legs bent underneath you like a pretzel?
- Sitting on one side of your pelvis with legs bent underneath you?
- Or some other configuration?
Start unwinding this posture and start sitting up right.
Let’s look at your posture from the side
Is your posture lining up? We should see:
- ear over shoulder
- shoulder over hip
- hip and knees bent 90 degrees with feet on the floor
But instead, could this be you:
- bottom half way down couch cushion (slouching)?
- head bent forward so you are hunched (on your phone)?
- Or some other configuration?
If you stay too long in any of these position you would probably end up with a sore and stiff low back, mid back or neck. Perhaps even the whole back seizes up. Again, start unwinding this posture and start sitting up.
So how is your couch posture?
- Are you watching TV?
- Reading?
- On your phone?
- Working on your laptop?
Let us know how well you are doing with this posture while on the couch.
Recapping for you:
- support lower back, keeping your forward lumbar curve & bottom back (no slouching)
- getting up every half an hour, go grab a glass of water and walk around the house 🏠
- keeping side posture balanced (ear over shoulder, over hip)
- keeping front to back posture balanced, no 🍌 banana backs, like in the photo above.
