Low Back Pain, Reduced Lumbar Curve & Returning to Cycling

A Chiropractic Case Study – Errol Street Chiropractic, North Melbourne

Low back pain can significantly affect quality of life, especially when it limits activities people enjoy. In this case, a gentleman presented to Errol Street Chiropractic with ongoing low back pain that prevented him from getting back on his bicycle.

Understanding the Spinal Findings

As part of a comprehensive assessment, EOS X-ray imaging was used to evaluate spinal alignment. These scans revealed a significantly reduced lumbar curve (lumbar lordosis). The low back curve plays an important role as a natural shock absorber. When this curve is reduced, the forces from daily activities are transferred more directly into the spinal joints, muscles, ligaments, discs, and surrounding nerves.

In addition to the altered spinal alignment, our examination identified stiffness in several lower lumbar joints, which can further restrict movement and contribute to discomfort.

Our Approach to Care

Care was guided by assessment findings and focused on improving spinal movement and flexibility. This included:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments aimed at improving mobility in the stiff lumbar joints
  • Targeted low back traction to increase stretch through the lumbar spine and support spinal curve restoration
  • Ongoing monitoring of spinal movement and comfort levels throughout care

The goal of this approach was to address joint stiffness, support spinal mechanics, and help reduce the stress placed on spinal structures.

Why Lumbar Curve Matters

A healthy lumbar curve helps distribute load efficiently through the spine. Loss of this curve may contribute to increased strain, reduced shock absorption, and altered movement patterns — all of which can affect comfort and function during daily activities such as cycling.

Supporting People Back to the Activities They Enjoy

Low back pain doesn’t just affect the spine — it can limit lifestyle, movement, and enjoyment. By identifying structural and movement-related factors contributing to discomfort, chiropractic care can play a role in supporting spinal function and mobility.
