Chiropractors treat Headaches
One of the reasons people visit a chiropractic is to seek help with headaches. In this blog we address the question of how do chiropractors treat headaches.
On the first visit:
When someone enters our office and let us know that they are suffering with headaches we generally ask questions such as:
- How long have you been suffering
- Where is the pain
- Do certain activities worsen the headaches
- Are there any associated symptoms with the headaches, such as blurred vision
- Was there an accident around the time of the headaches commencing
- What sort of treatment have you tried to date
- Desk ergonomics
- Sleep posture
Testing:
Our next step is to determine if the headache may be coming from a misalignment (subluxation) in the neck or from poor posture.
We test the following:
- Neck range of movement
- Nerve reflexes from the neck
- Muscle testing arms and checking strength, looking at nerve pressure and weakening
- Posture analysis
- Joint mobility
- Muscle tension
What are our concerns:
We keep in mind that some headaches can be sinister. High blood pressure, diabetes, history of recent accidents, history or cancer will ring alarm bells and we need to make sure the headaches are not secondary to an illness or condition.
Do we need xrays?
Xrays will be taken if we feel that structural changes may be present in the neck. If there are any degenerative changes in the neck or a loss of neck curve, then these concerns may contribute to headaches.
How do we treat the neck?
If we find restrictions in the neck then our job is to restore neck movement and function. We do this by applying a gentle force, we call an adjustment, to the effected joints.
When there is a loss of normal neck alignment, our approach is to apply the Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) protocol of care. This may include home traction on a Denneroll and may also include in office traction on a Denneroll table.
