Important Advice for Cervical Denneroll Users

If you’ve been prescribed a Cervical Denneroll as part of your Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP) care, it’s important to know how to get off the cervical Denneroll properly after completing your traction session.

At Errol Street Chiropractic Centre, we carefully guide patients through the correct use of all Denneroll orthotics, including:

  • Cervical Dennerolls
  • Thoracic Dennerolls
  • Lumbar Dennerolls
  • Scolirolls

These devices are commonly used both in practice and at home to help support posture correction and spinal rehabilitation.

What Does a Denneroll Do?

A Denneroll is a spinal orthotic designed to apply a sustained stretch to specific areas of the spine.

In CBP care, chiropractors use Dennerolls to help improve spinal curves and posture by placing the spine into a corrective position for a prescribed period of time. As a result, the spine and surrounding tissues experience a controlled and targeted stretch.

Over several minutes, a process called a visco-elastic deformation effect occurs within the:

  • muscles
  • ligaments
  • spinal connective tissues

Consequently, this deeper stretch may help support gradual improvements in spinal alignment and posture over time.

Why Some People Feel “Stuck” After Using a Denneroll

One of the most common things patients say after using a Denneroll incorrectly is:

“I couldn’t lift my head up.”

Although this feeling can seem unusual, it is often completely normal.

After several minutes of traction, the deep stretch temporarily changes how the muscles engage. Therefore, the muscles often need several seconds to activate and stabilise the area again.

If someone tries to sit up too quickly, the muscles may not respond immediately. As a result, lifting the head or body can feel difficult.

For this reason, learning the correct technique is extremely important.

How to Get Off the Denneroll Properly

After your timer finishes and your traction session is complete:

  1. Use one hand to gently support and lift your head.
  2. Then, use your other hand to remove the Denneroll from underneath you.
  3. Next, lie flat for about a minute and allow the muscles to re-engage.
  4. When ready, slowly roll onto your side.
  5. Finally, gradually sit up and gently begin moving around again.

Most importantly, move slowly and allow your body time to adapt after traction.

Why Denneroll Timing Matters

Patients prescribed a Denneroll follow an individualised program designed specifically for their spine and posture.

This program includes:

  • the correct Denneroll size
  • positioning of the orthotic
  • progression of traction time
  • home traction instructions

In most cases, patients gradually build up to around 15–20 minutes over time, depending on their condition and clinical findings.

Above all, chiropractors progress care carefully and specifically to suit each individual, this is why understanding How to get Off the Cervical Denneroll Properly is vital to your care and progress.

Not Everyone Qualifies for a Cervical Denneroll

A Cervical Denneroll should only be prescribed after a detailed assessment by a trained Chiropractic BioPhysics® chiropractor.

At Errol Street Chiropractic Centre, assessments may include:

  • posture evaluation
  • spinal examination
  • digital posture analysis
  • X-rays or EOS imaging where clinically appropriate

This assessment helps determine:

  • whether a Denneroll is appropriate
  • which size should be used
  • where it should be positioned
  • how long traction should be performed

Because every spine is different, chiropractors should always personalise home traction programs.

Chiropractic BioPhysics® & Posture Correction

Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP) is one of the most researched approaches in chiropractic for posture and spinal curve rehabilitation.

Specifically, CBP focuses on:

  • improving spinal alignment
  • restoring healthier spinal curves
  • reducing abnormal spinal stress
  • improving posture and movement patterns

Home traction using devices like the Denneroll often forms one part of a broader CBP rehabilitation program.
